Maryland Milestones is excited to welcome Heritage Resource Consultant Sarah Marsom for a virtual suffrage banner workshop!Voting rights advocacy didn't stop with the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote! This workshop will explore how and why the suffrage movement pushed BIPOC to the sidelines and dive into the activism efforts that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. You'll learn about which suffragists continued their fight for voting rights, what events were tied to this legislation, and about activists who fought hard to ensure everyone could have the ability to vote. Following a presentation, participants will be guided through the creation of their own small felt or paper banners (you can stitch your banner or use glue). Banners are encouraged to incorporate iconography from the activism of the past, but you can express yourself in whatever direction you want! Make a banner to motivate yourself, pay homage to the past, or advocate for something you believe in today. Participants will be provided with a stencil pack to help inspire their creative expression.

Suggested materials: 3 or more sheets of felt or paper in different colors, scissors, needle, thread, glue.
